I spent a very long time folding up the torn piece of paper. I had already grabbed my pen and ripped a page out of my notebook to begin compiling my list when she clarified that she was asking whether I thought it was ‘okay’ for children to learn that gay people exist. I was feeling generous, so I chose to interpret her question as a request for children’s texts with excellent queer representation that she could use as teaching resources with her primary school class. She feels that other people will make her symptoms heighten, and can't handle that.Last week at a graduate conference an educator asked me whether I thought we should teach children about “homosexuality”. Now that Anna's here, Elsa sees that she is not free, she still has as much fear as when she left.

Earlier, when Elsa says that she is free, she means that she was free to be herself without the fear of not being accepted or hurting others. Elsa refers to depression as a curse, and curses are hard to get rid of. Now, I always cry at this part, because I can relate. Oh, Anna please you'll only make it worse! There's no escape from the storm inside of me Anna sees that fear makes it worse, and wants to avoid anything bad. What really gets me is when Anna said, "Don't panic". While Elsa only believes that she can harm people, Anna is looking at the side of Elsa that she herself cannot see. But Anna keeps trying to change Elsa's mind.

First Anna, then Elsa.Īnna knows that her sister is afraid. Okay, Let's break the Duet into two parts. Elsa sees that she has done damage to people's lives, and this is what really makes her decide to stay locked away, yet Anna is still persistent. I think that if Anna would've said this a bit differently, she could've avoided turning into ice, as this is what is almost Elsa's trigger. Just stay away and you'll be safe from me"Įlsa is saying that she doesn't want anyone else to get hurt (emotionally) because of her, so she's almost warning Anna to get away before something happens. Anna realizes the fear that Elsa is concealing, and not feeling, and is offering her support as a sister and friend. It is Anna's belief that she can help Elsa beat this sadness, this guilt inside of her. You don't have to keep your distance anymore"Īnna knows about Elsa's depression, but insists that she can lose her sister behind a barrier anymore. "You don't have to protect me, I'm not afraid! Now, with my interpretation, please think of Elsa's powers as depression instead. As one currently suffering depression, I can understand Elsa on different levels than others can.

My InterpretationI'm going to start out by saying that I am basically proud of Disney for coming out with a movie with a character, Elsa, as a metaphor for depression. You've kind of set off an eternal winter. Just stay away and you'll be safe from me You don't have to keep your distance anymore You don't have to protect me, I'm not afraid!
